Extending the reach of your Wi-Fi
Are you having problems getting a Wi-Fi signal around your home or office, or even in a yard or garden?
Then a Wi-Fi extender, also referred to as a range expander, is probably the answer. We were asked recently to install a weatherproof Wi-Fi extender at a location in Chichester, to boost the signal strength and, expand the network reach to those dark corners at the extreme limits of a standard wireless router’s range.
The Wi-Fi extender is simply connected, via ethernet or wireless, to the router or an access point. This enables the extender to retransmit the signal, thereby expanding the Wi-Fi network catchment area.
The transmission speed for clients connecting through a Wi-Fi extender, whilst very good, may not quite reach the strength of the source signal, simply due to latency for each hop. The fewer the hops, the greater the Wi-Fi strength will be.
Either way, it is normally a massive improvement for those receiving a weak signal or none at all.
Was the security of the extended Wi-Fi compromised? Not at all! Wi-Fi extenders offer the same levels of security as the source Wi-Fi routers, so all clients connecting to the wider network have the same peace of mind.
Whilst at the installation location, we were also asked to fit a Freeview TV digital aerial, together with a DAB and FM radio aerials. These can be seen in the image, attached to the chimney.
A good job, well done!
